Deeeeelicious.
Apr. 28th, 2011 03:18 pmSo, I just got this in my email.
I am torn. On the one hand, yay, Delicious continueth. On the other hand, I know nothing of AVOS, and don't know whether to trust them or not. On the third hand, nobody has more of a rep for screwing up their acquisitions than Yahoo, so if Yahoo didn't ruin Delicious hopefully nobody will. And the comments on the deliciously_mad discussion post indicate that "pornographic" content is against the TOS, which might make it freakin' useless for fandom content.
Argh. What I really want, I think, is the fannish Delicious equivalent that was being bruited around on
deliciouslymad when Yahoo tried to shut Delicious down late last year. It seems nothing has eventuated, though.
Dear Delicious User,
Yahoo! is excited to announce that Delicious has been acquired by the founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. As creators of the largest online video platform, Hurley and Chen have firsthand expertise enabling millions of consumers to share their experiences with the world. Delicious will become part of their new Internet company, AVOS.
To continue using Delicious, you must agree to let Yahoo! transfer your bookmarks to AVOS. After a transition period and after your bookmarks are transferred, you will be subject to the AVOS terms of service and privacy policy.
Reasons to let Yahoo! transfer your bookmarks
• Continue uninterrupted use of Delicious.
• Keep your Delicious account and all your bookmarks.
• Enjoy the same look and feel of Delicious today plus future product innovations.
What happens if you do not transfer your bookmarks
• Delicious in its current form will be available until approximately July 2011.
• After that, you will no longer be able to use your existing Delicious account and will not have
access to your existing bookmarks or account information.
About AVOS
AVOS is a new Internet company founded by Chad Hurley and Steve Chen who, in 2005, founded YouTube, the world's largest online video platform. Before YouTube, Hurley and Chen were early employees at PayPal, a leading online payment service that is now part of eBay. Delicious will become a part of AVOS, based in San Mateo, California.

Date: 2011-04-28 05:37 am (UTC)Well, ironically, I ended up deleting one of my two Delicious accounts as soon as I got this notice. (I'm not protesting or anything, it was just an account that I was halfheartedly using as backup site organization, which now that there's AO3, I have no need for.) The other one, I had never converted to a Yahoo! account, which shows you how often I log in. BUT now I'm thinking I might start using it a little more! I might delete all the current bookmarks and start over. Hmm.
I don't see how the pornographic thing can possibly apply to links. Links are like 1-800 numbers. The minute someone turns their head, they turn into porn. (We had a 1-800 number we were supposed to call if our winter holiday tree broke. When it did, three years later... porn.) A linker cannot be held responsible for the content on the page they link to changing, because that is simply not under their control. Now, descriptions, dunno. I... just can't imagine how much pornographic content that would be considered pornography and not, like, adult or erotica, can be packed into a description field. So I'm not gonna worry, but again, I don't use Delicious much.
I agree that if Yahoo didn't ruin Delicious, likely AVOS won't, either! We'll see how it goes. My favorite part about this is that it means that my Yahoo! account and Delicious account never need to meet. ♥

Date: 2011-04-28 06:15 am (UTC)On the other hand, since the original scare, I have fallen absolutely in love with Pinboard. It costs $10 to create an account, but wow are they passionate about what they're doing and responsive to their users. Check out their terms of service. And their attitude towards fic. My level of love for them means I'm *this close* to creating a
