I have just been curled up with Under Heaven, the latest book from my much-loved Favouritest Author Ever (that would be Guy Gavriel Kay), and I'm happy as a clam. I don't know what it is about his writing, but I can only ever stand to read a few chapters at a time because it's so... intense, I suppose. His style isn't overwrought or purple, but he's a master of eliciting emotions, and his books are never easy reads, emotionally speaking.

Mm. So good.

Okay, I saw this and went "YAY!" and then checked out Amazon and it's not available for Kindle. Maybe the US publisher didn't give Amazon the rights or something. :(

Of course, it's Kay, so if I have to buy a dead tree edition, I will.

He is ALSO my most favorited author ever (I got him for YULETIDE and I put together a Tigana fan mix once and I would like to BE him if I grow up) and now that I have finished my two final papers I can GET THIS BOOK. I am so happy right now.

Oh god, I have to step away from the computer.

I was skimming my reading page and saw the phrase "much-loved Favourite Author Ever" and got a pre-emptive cringe of "oh god, another one slamming fanfic?" and it wasn't til I read your post properly that I realised, no, GGK hasn't been saying how fanfic authors kill kittens or whatevs. Phew. So, I'm glad you are having good reading and that at least someone's favourite author isn't failing hard today!

If you don't know about this great feature of John Scalzi's weblog, check out Guy Gavriel Kay's "The Big Idea" post about Under Heaven. It's a delightful promotional service Scalzi offers - authors with new books out are invited to submit a post talking about the things that triggered their work. It's really bad for my wallet but good for my mind. :)

I LOVE Kay. So very much. Though his books always leave me a bit ... raw ... after.

This is an excellent way of describing the experience of reading a GGK book! Even a single line of his can carry so much history and emotion in it and can end up just devastating me.
