star trek: into darkness

In brief: I enjoyed it more than I expected.
Upfront: what the fucking fuck, JJ, how is it okay to cast Benedict Cumberbatch -- the whitest of white dudes -- as KHAN NOONIEN SINGH? Seriously, what the hell? Hollywood, you are a bunch of epic dickbags.
Also, gotta say, I do not understand the love for Cumberbatch. He could not have chewed the scenery more if he'd tried.
Basically, I hated the plot. I thought it was stupid, and really ham-handedly foreshadowed. I don't have any particular love for the original movie as I frankly do not like TOS much at all, so I'm not saying this out of offended fangirl rage; I just thought the story was paper-thin and formulaic, though the action set-pieces were appropriately epic. And as I've seen said elsewhere: what the hell is the point of rebooting the universe if you're then going to retell exactly the same stories, without any substantial differences?
I really loved the character interactions, though. Everything that people write fic about; that's what I loved about the movie. I liked the diversity of crew -- with JJ's movie budget, we finally get to see a spaceship full of alien races, not just humans plus two token humans-with-ridged-noses-or-funny-ears. I loved the repeat appearances in background crew, giving us some continuity. (Hannity! Madeline! CUPCAKE! I squee'd so hard when I saw Cupcake.)
I even didn't hate Carol Marcus's epic horror-movie scream moment, which made me roll my eyes so hard when I saw it in the trailer. Given the context, I think it was entirely justified.
I liked that Spock got the epic fight scene with Khan. I like the character growth we see from both Spock and Kirk.
I -- yeah, I don't have much intelligent to say at this point. I'll engage Critical Analysis Brain after I see it again. I hated the plot; I loved the characters. And who needs plot anyway?
I can't wait for the fic.
