I only just thought to check...
Sep. 3rd, 2011 02:58 am...and Natalie Portman, aka Dr Jane Foster, isn't listed as part of the cast for The Avengers.
I really hope Dr Foster at least gets a reference in the movie, as the means by which the Bifrost is reopened or some such.
Looking at the properties from which the team is spawned:
* Iron Man: Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff both make it in; Gwyneth Paltrow is credited as Pepper Potts, although a fair way down the list - below Paul Bettany as Jarvis, even.
* Captain America: Cap, obviously, makes it in. Peggy Carter doesn't, although to be fair that is necessary due to the timeline, and "Sharon" from the end of Captain America is listed as "Sharon Carter", so hopefully she's Peggy's daughter and a kickass agent in her own right. (In the comics she's variously Peggy's younger sister and/or niece, and Cap's love interest.)
* The Incredible Hulk: Bruce Banner makes it in (with a change in actor); Betsy Ross doesn't.
* Thor: This is the really disappointing one. Thor, Loki, Dr Selvig and Hawkeye all show up in The Avengers. Jane Foster and Darcy Lewis do not.
The main Avengers cast is then, unsurprisingly, rounded out by Nick Fury & Phil Coulson, with the addition of Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill.
Hooray. Of all the awesome female characters in all the lead-in movies, a total of one makes it into The Avengers proper, plus two more in tiny roles, plus one more woman is added (and not a superhero, either, although Hill is canonically in a position of power, at least).
So the final Avengers cast: five male heroes and one female hero; five secondary male characters vs three secondary female characters. Wow; you could remake Sloane's Too Many Dicks On The Dance Floor for this and it'd fit just as well. That's so disappointing.
And it could have been just as authentic with an even gender balance; I can think of half a dozen female Avengers from the comics they could have used instead of half the guys. (Without even going obscure, where's Spider-Woman, Wasp, Storm, the Scarlet Witch, Ms Marvel, Power Woman? Except then, oh, you'd have to give them their own origin movie, and audiences wouldn't watch that, right Hollywood?
Don't mind me; I'm just bitter. I've really enjoyed all the Avengers franchise movies and I'm really looking forward to the band getting (back) together next year, but the treatment of the franchise's female characters seems tokenistic at best. Pepper Potts is way down the list; Jane Foster and Darcy Lewis have disappeared; the only female character with star billing is the generically sexy one with the photogenic slinky catsuit. I think we've all heard this story before, and I for one am getting really tired of it.
