"Yeah, well, you get shanked by the Asgardian Mussolini, you can tell it your way." ♥ COULSON
Coulson's characterisation is not what I expected, but it makes sense that he's a bit warmer and more open with his SHIELD colleagues than we've seen him in the MCU to date, since up til now he's largely been wrangling recalcitrant strangers.
Yay Ron Glass! I love that he's apparently the head of SHIELD medical. I will be writing that into my headcanon for all the fic I read, that's for damn sure. :)
I have less than zero interest in Agent Ward and his Bad Childhood. More angsty white dude manpain. Move along. (Oh and of course he's just inordinately good at everything ever. Barf. Hello, paging Gary Stu.)
Oooh. Apparently "Tahiti" is code for "the afterlife"? Or something? Mystery! dun-dun-DUN!
Is it just me or is the dialogue really ham-handed? I get that they have to fill in a lot of MCU history for casual viewers, but ... this is really not up to par. Still, I imagine that's first-episode blues, in large part, and I'm prepared to cut them some slack. But c'mon. "He doesn't know, does he?" "He can never know." *srsface* C'MON.
I chortled madly at the "with great power comes... a ton of weird crap that you are not prepared to deal with" bit. Nice. :)
Michael Peterson, eh? I was putting money on J August Richards being Eli Bradley or (more likely, given the kid, but also more sadly given that he's a jerk) Luke Cage.
"This is where they actually make the red tape, isn't it? I always wondered." COULSON ♥♥♥
Awww, they live on their plane! This is NCIS Red done right, isn't it? :)
Just once, I would like to see technical experts who aren't socially maladjusted caricatures, though.
Oooh, so, Michael Peterson is an unwitting stooge for some Evil Genius, huh?
Okay, the sodium pentathol scene was fairly hilarious. :D
Nice tie-ins of the various hero Macguffins - the serum, gamma radiation, Extremis, et cetera. Though it all feels a bit jammed-in-there.
The denouement was nicely done, I thought. Coulson is credible as a talker-down of people on the edge, much more so than the rest of his team.
...oh come on, a flying car? Really? Sheesh.
In conclusion, why don't I have any MCU icons? I must fix that.
Also in conclusion: based on this, I don't love Agents of SHIELD for its own sake, but I look forward to the worldbuilding it contributes, and the extra MCU fic it's no doubt going to inspire. (Given that Thor spawned a massive fandom for two characters who never even meet, and one of whom only has two lines, i.e. Clint/Darcy, I have great hopes for the AoS/MCU crossovers.)

I agree. Ditch him, dial down the scientists, and let Melinda May, Coulson, and Skye run around being badass together.

I don't know if it was just me, but it did not feel like a Joss Whedon show to me. He's listed as the director and one of the writers for the pilot episode, but I was honestly surprised to find that out. That's not a criticism, necessarily, but I do think it suggests the show still needs to find its feet.
