A massive SHIELD plot hole just occurred to me this morning.
So you have to have Level 7 clearance to be aware of Coulson's continued existence? Then why the hell is he out in front of the Union Station operation, talking down Mike Peterson, when they have the entire rest of the team on-site?
You really think Tony's not going to see footage of that, given that he has JARVIS on hand to trawl the media for him?
"Mr. Stark, video of an incident at Union Station this afternoon indicate that somebody other than AIM is making and distributing Extremis. Also, analysis of this footage suggests that the lead SHIELD agent is Philip Coulson. Which suit would you like me to prepare for your imminent trip to the Helicarrier, sir?"
I mean, seriously, that is not going to stay a secret for long. So what's the point? I'm forced to conclude that it's a cheap throw-away dialogue gag for the pilot, because there's no possible way Coulson is acting like someone whose very existence is classified.
Also, the implication that Ward has a higher clearance than Natasha? COME ON. (Higher than Hawkeye, I'd believe, since Hawkeye was heavily compromised by Loki and has probably lost most of his clearances, but Natasha? Nooooo.)
So, yeah. I still enjoyed it - I rewatched it a couple of nights ago so Chris could see it, and I actually enjoyed it more on second viewing - but that sort of lazy writing is not what I expect from the Mutant Enemy team.
On the up side, at least I have a Natasha icon now!
