Ah, the joys of indexed journals that show up in search results when one is looking for Festivids posts. :D

I use Mac the Ripper for most ripping. It will work on anything except the latest, greatest DRM. (So Avengers gave me trouble, but almost nothing else ever has. At least... I think it was DRM. Maybe that DVD is just fucked up.) There's a newer version of the program, but you have to jump through hoops to get it, so I'm not interested. Handbrake is the other common choice. Aside from those, the options tend to be things you have to shell out for, some of which might be worth it if DRM is giving you issues.

I rip to .VOB, convert to DV for Final Cut using MPEG Streamclip, export from Final Cut as-is in an enormous, uncompressed file, and encode for upload using MPEG Streamclip again and a H.264 codec.

Vidding chat is at least a little bit active all year round, just more so during Festivids season.
