What has it got in its pocketses?

So, I finally saw The Hobbit on Saturday night.

I liked it more than I was expecting to, given how much I disliked Jackson's LotR trilogy. I really only had three quibbles - one story-based, two staging-based.

1) Story-based: I felt they got the Gandalf/Galadriel dynamic wrong. He was way too subservient to her; it went too far past respect, I felt. He's not answerable to her, and the movie implied that he was. (He was, on the other hand, answerable to Saruman, and I really liked Saruman here. Well played.)

2) Staging-based: I felt the Heroic Manly Slo-Mo Staring Meaningfully Into The Middle Distance went on slightly too long, pretty much every time it happened. The slo-mo was just a bit too slo.

3) Staging-based: I get that Thorin and Kili are meant to be the poster boys and thus can't be "ugly" like the other dwarves (although seriously, Fili was hot), but I found their undwarfyness totally distracting. Thorin was at least semi-passable from some angles, what with the rather statesman-like nose and all, but Kili was far, far too undwarfy-looking. Hot like burning, yes, but jarringly *not* dwarven. (Though oddly, I didn't find James Nesbitt's au naturel look as Bofur nearly as jarring, possibly because his hat was so compelling I couldn't look at anything else.)

Other than those points, I didn't really have any complaints. It was long, but I never looked at my watch; I liked most of the incorporation of extraneous material (I did think Radagast was a bit too comical and didn't command enough respect, but on the other hand, bunny sledge ftw); the scenery was gorgeous; and the set design was, as always, glorious. Erebor in particular was awesome (and felt very familiar to anyone who's played LotRO, I think!). The 3D really paid off there, I must say.

Other than that, I have only one real thing to say: FUCK YEAH DWARVES.

I love the dwarves so much. I want to take all of them home and feed them and have them do my dishes and sing me songs. FUCK YEAH, DWARVES.
