eleanorjane: Elwood Blues, staring out his bedroom window at the L. (pensive)

Well, I just got home from the Annual Traditional Boxing Day Watching Of The Middle-Earth Movie - on this occasion, the third Hobbit movie.

* Peter Jackson really needs to lay off the Emotional Stare-Off as a way of conveying the emotional import of a scene. It's overused in all the Hobbit movies, especially so in this one IMO, and it dilutes its emotional impact to the point of eye-rolling.

* Tauriel: STILL MY FAVOURITE OMG.

* The battle didn't feel even remotely resolved; it just sort of ... went away ... after all the focal characters had had their action scene.

* Legolas's action scenes felt over the top, but on the other hand, this is a dude who's been swanning around as an action hero for hundreds of years (possibly a couple of thousand) at this point, with a body that doesn't age. His muscle memory would have to be ridiculously refined by now.

* I thought Billy Connolly was going to be stunt casting, but I thought he worked surprisingly well.

* I see Jackson is still getting Galadriel wrong. (IMO.)

* I thought the movie did a much better job than the book of making peoples' motivations understandable; in the book (at least in my memory; it's been a long time) it's never really clear why the dwarves, elves and men are so resolutely antagonistic, so it feels like stubbornness in service of the plot, whereas in the movie their motivations felt much more realistic.

So, overall, I enjoyed it but I'd say it was pretty flawed.
